Laser hair removal has been on the rise for the past decade due to the many benefits it offers.

But what is it really??

Many of us have a general idea of the procedure, but if you are considering going on the journey of laser hair removal, we are here to explain the details of the process to clear up any confusion you may have.

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure used to treat the growth of unwanted hair. Shaving and waxing can be a hassle and incredibly time-consuming when you have to constantly keep up with it. Laser hair removal will halt hair growth in your desired treatment area, eliminating the need to constantly shave!

The option of laser hair removal is great for people with darker hair. Sometimes when you shave dark hair, it still shows the dark hair follicle beneath the skin. To achieve a smooth skin look, completely removing the hair shaft will take away the darkness left behind.

The Process

Are you curious about how laser hair removal works?

Laser hair removal utilizes a laser to target the hair follicles in areas of unwanted hair growth to eliminate future hair growth.

Diode 810 Laser

While there are several different forms of laser hair removal, we utilize the Diode 810 Laser.

The laser emits a light that zaps the hair follicle and is absorbed by the melanin in the hair. These hair follicles within the skin are what produce hair. When they are zapped by the laser, they lose their regenerative properties which then decline their ability to grow hair. This, in turn, removes hair from the area.

Technicians will utilize a numbing gel to help with the uncomfortable zaps from the laser. This is especially useful when doing laser hair removal work on the upper lip or bikini line because these are areas of high sensitivity.

After you complete your treatment, it’s necessary to avoid sun exposure as a sunburn can lead to intense skin irritation. This is especially important for those of you with light skin! Since you burn easier, stay out of the sun as much as you can during your treatment process.

Misconceptions

There are several misconceptions about the laser hair removal process. We are here to clear them up so that you too can become an expert on laser hair removal treatments.

Some of the most common are as follows:

It’s a Painful Process

Depending on your pain tolerance, this is not a painful process. We like to describe it as equal to the sting of a rubber band snapping on your skin–a little uncomfortable, but not unbearable!

Most patients have no problem with the sting, so don’t be discouraged by the fear of intense pain!

It’s a One Time Process

Laser hair removal does not make your hair disappear overnight. Hair often regrows after your first treatment because this process is not a single treatment that will permanently eliminate all of your hair growth.

Laser hair reduction will require 6-8 repeated treatments spaced out every 4-8 weeks. However, you are still able to see results after the first time you receive treatment! Depending on your skin type, more or fewer treatments may be needed.

Your hair and skin color play a role in how quickly you can complete this process. Those of you with a darker skin color might require more treatments due to the lack of contrast between the color of hair and skin. Lighter skin tones may not  need as many sessions because the color contrast between the hair and skin is greater.  .

It’s Permanent Hair Removal

Although the process is more widely known as “laser hair removal”, we like to use the term “laser hair reduction”.

Laser hair reduction is the best option for working towards permanent hair loss. This process slows down the regrowth of body hair over an extended period of time which makes it feel like it is a permanent treatment.

Maintenance laser treatments may have to be utilized after a few years from your first initial treatment because laser hair removal is not guaranteed to be permanent.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?

Laser hair removal does not have a single set price. It will vary from person to person based on how many treatments will be needed. Hair thickness, the area being treated, and your hair’s growth cycle will determine how many treatments will be required.
